NMBF College Scholarships
The New Mexico Broadcasters Foundation will award up to $25,000 in scholarships to residents of New Mexico who desire a career iin any area of the radio or television broadcast industry, including news writing, announcing, sales, traffic, programming, public or community
affairs, engineering, accounting, or management.
If you are a student at one of New Mexico's colleges or univerities and are interested in broadcasting, please take a moment to
review our scholarship requirements below. Scholarship applications are now being accepted to the 2010-11 school year.

Scholarships
This year, New Mexico Broadcasters Association Foundation has also teamed up with
Character Counts! for the “Pete V.
Domenici Character Counts Scholarship Program”. This program works with radio and television stations
statewide to offer Character Counts scholarships to New Mexico high school students.

Careers in Broadcasting
NEWS: To work in a news department, students should study writing and
communication in both English and Spanish, including editing written material, and can include on-air
work. See courses in Communications.
SALES: To work in a sales department, students should should study writing and
communication in both English and Spanish, and/or public relations,and can include basic accounting
courses. See courses in Mass Communications.
ENGINEERING: Broadcast engineering is based actual working
experience, but can include studies in mechanical and computer engineering.

TRAFFIC AND BILLING: A general education degree is helpful
in this sector of the industry, including bilingual studies and basic math.

PROMOTION: A station's promotions department relies on
well-organized individuals with a well-rounded education including public relations courses, writing

COMMUNITY AFFAIRS: A station's community affairs department
relies on well-organized individuals with a good general education including public relations courses,
writing and basic college math. See courses in Communications and Mass

PROGRAMMING: Programming departments look for individuals to
perform actual on-air
work, coordinate remote broadcasts, etc. Educational requirements for this job would include a good
general education including writing, bilingual education, college algebra and public relations courses.

PRODUCTION: Working in the producation departmentwould be be served by
a good general education including writing and communication in both English and Spanish, including
editing written material. Other courses to take may include public relations, and mass media.

NMBF CollegiateScholarship Requirements
- Students must be a resident of New Mexico. Students must use the scholarship to attend an accredited
college, vocational institution or university in the State of New Mexico.
- Scholarship funds are payable directly to the student and may be used to defray the cost of tuition,
books, supplies and fees during the current academic year.
- A letter of recommendation from an appropriate school official, confirming academic achievement and
commitment to a broadcasting career is required.
- You must be entering your sophomore, junior or senior year.
- Completion of
an official application form is required. Send official transcripts for each application. Deadline
for submitting applications is Friday, April 23, 2010.
